Prospect Name:
Marcus Monk
Position: WR
School: Arkansas
40 Time: 4.60
Height: 6-6
Weight: 220
Jersey #: 85
NFL Comparison: Matt Jones
Projection: First Round Pick
Strengths: Marcus Monk is one of those guys that is a great prospect, whose talents have gone under the radar, because of the talent that is around him (Darren McFadden.) The first thing that stands out about Monk is his tremendous size (6-6, 220 lbs.) Monk uses his size wonderfully when going after the football by just over-powering smaller corners and safeties. In high school, Monk was a tremendous basketball player as well and played a little bit of ball his freshmen year at Arkansas. His basketball skills have carried over to his football skills and have helped him become a much better prospect. For example, Monk has shown that he can go up and catch football, kind of like a rebound, using his tremendous vertical leap. The two strengths that I have previously mentioned can possibly go together and form Monk into a tight end in the NFL, that could possibly compare to Antonio Gates or Tony Gonzalez. For now though, Monk should just stick to receiver where he is already tremendously skilled. For what Monk lacks in speed, he makes up in route running which isn't great, but isn't poor by any means. Monk also has soft hands, and tends to make tough catches look easy.
Areas For Improvement: When draft day finally approaches, the one thing that will hurt Monk's stock will be his 40 time, unless he shocks the world. Monk is definitely a possession receiver, so a slow 40 time is expected of him, but if he can run in the 4.5's his stock will soar. Monk needs to work on picking up yards after the catch between now and draft day. Lastly, Monk needs to improve his route running, which isn't bad, but not great.
Overall Assessment: Overall, Marcus Monk is one of my favorite WR prospects to be part of the 2008 NFL Draft. He's definitely not going to be the quickest WR in the class, but he is still one of the most athletic. With terrific leaping ability and soft hands, Monk is a good looking receiver prospect who as of now, is a definite first rounds pick.
